NEW BEDFORD: Maria (Cabral) Melo, 103, of New Bedford, passed away Wednesday, April 20 after a period of declining health at New Bedford Healthcare Center. She was the widow of Ernesto Cabral Melo.
Born in New Bedford in 1907, at the age of 5 years, immagrated with her parents, the late Joao and Francisca (daSilva) Cabral, to Feteira Grande, Sao Miguel, Azores. Returning to New Bedford with her husband and family in 1952.
She was the communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. She worked as a stitcher at States Nitewear until 1972.
She is survived by two sons; Manuel Melo and his wife Maria Jose of Fairhaven, Jose Melo of New Bedford, 6 daughters: Maria deMedeiros and her husband Tobias of New Bedford, Salome Cordeiro of Acushnet, Isabel Cardoso and her husband Daniel of Dartmouth, Angelina Martin of New Bedford, Rosa Romano of Dartmouth, Linda Wisneiwski and her husband Paul of Sandwich. 28 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, April 24, from 5 to 8 PM at the CABRAL BAYLIES SQUARE LAMOUREUX FUNERAL HOME at 512 N. Front St. New Bedford. Funeral on Monday, April 25, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Earle St. Burial at St. John's Cemetery.
