NEW BEDFORD:  Maria do Carmo (de Melo) de Melo, 92, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital, February 24, 2019, after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Manuel "Feiteira" de Melo.

She was born in Fenais D'Ajuda, St. Miguel, Azores to the late Jose P. Mariano and Germanina de Melo, she was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Formally employed as a Stitcher at Calvin Clothing, until her retirement. She was a member of the Amalgamated Union.

She is survived by two daughters Filomena de Medeiros and her husband Joao of New Bedford, Nisia Couto and her husband Artur of St. Miguel, a brother Jaime Pacheco of New Bedford, a sister Assuncao Pacheco of Canada. Also survived by two grandchildren, Chantel Cabral, Cassandra Couto, three great-grandchildren Elijah, Arianna, Keira, also several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 6 to 8 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Thursday at 9:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. Interment at St. John Cemetery.

I have known your mother my entire adult life. She was the sweetest, kindest woman with a deep joy of life and love for family. I will miss her laughter and kindness. The world has lost an exceptional women and heaven gained an angel. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole extended family. Your mom, grandmother, great-grandmother was a precious gift. Although we could not communicate very effectively through language because we don't speak Portuguese very well, her loving and caring manner communicated with us without the spoken word. She generously shared her loving kindness with her neighbors. We are deeply sorry for your loss.
