NEW BEDFORD: August Mattos, of New Bedford, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. He was 88 years old. August was the son of the late John Mattos and Caroline (Fagundes) Mattos. He is survived by his wife, Margarida (Freitas) Mattos, daughter, Linda (Mattos) Nosul and son Steven J. Mattos, all of New Bedford..

August (Gus) Mattos was the wonderful grandfather of Katherine and Fredric Nosul, both of New Bedford, and Alisha Mattos of Upton, Mass.

Gus was also the brother of Julieta (Mattos) Rocha, of Florida, and the late Dennis Mattos and Nina (Mattos) Pinto of New Bedford. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as two brothers-in-law, John Carvalho of Assonet and Frank Rocha of Florida.

August (Gus) Mattos was born on a farm in Mattapoisett, on August 16, 1931 and graduated from New Bedford High School. He joined the Army in 1949 and served during the Korean War. Upon his return home, he secured a job at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, were he worked as a supervisor for 37 years until his retirement. Gus married Margarida Freitas in 1954 and they celebrated 66 years of marriage on June 12, 2020. 

"Grampy" loved crossword puzzles, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, walks in the park with his grandchildren, listening to the radio and watching the Red Sox. Gus was a wonderful father who took his wife and children to the Cape every summer, where they shared many, many wonderful memories. He also loved to go fishing with his son, daughter and grandkids, and at one time even rode his Moped happily around town.

August Mattos was a beloved patriarch who will be missed by all of his loved ones.

His funeral services will be private.
