NEW BEDFORD, On Saturday, February 27, 2021, Bertha M. Pacheco, age 85, passed away at home after a long battle with cancer and dementia.  She was attended by the caring nurses and home health aides of SouthCoast Hospice.  She was born in Livramento, Sao Miguel Azores, to the late Benjamin and Leontina deMelo before moving to Canada and finally settling in New Bedford. She worked as a stitcher at various textile mills in New Bedford before retiring and was a member of the ILGWU.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years John J. Pacheco, her sons Paul and his wife Jackie of Acushnet and Liberal and his wife Tenney of Lakeville.  She is survived by her sister, Mercedes Pacheco of Sao Miguel.  She was also the sister of the late Maria Isabel Amaral and John Botelho deMelo.

She adored and was loved by her 5 grandchildren, Katelyn Rebello and her husband David of New Bedford, Matthew Pacheco and his wife Allana of Fairhaven, Tamra Teixeira and her husband Michael of Acushnet, Jacob Pacheco and Faith Pacheco of Lakeville.  In addition she is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Haven and Chase Teixeira and Layne Pacheco.  Spending time with her family was her greatest joy.  Her granddaughters will especially miss Vavo’s soothing leg rubs, for which they would race to be first to receive.  She was a fantastic cook; her homemade sweet bread, malassadas, and sweet rice were legendary.

Bertha touched the hearts of everyone she met, her smile was infectious and her loving gentle nature endeared people to her.
