NEW BEDFORD, Charles Emile Houbre, age 89 of S. Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on July 19 after a brief illness. He was born July 15, 1932 in New Bedford to Emile and Rose Houbre. He was a 1950 graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School with an emphasis in carpentry. Charles retired from Morse Twist Drill Company after 30 years of service where he was a skilled craftsman. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, S. Dartmouth, where he attended daily Mass for many years. He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and was a regular volunteer with the food pantry at Catholic Social Services at Mt. Carmel Church. When he wasn’t spending time with his family, he could be found strumming his guitar, tending his garden, or working in his wood shop where he created special treasures for his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Peckham. Charles loved his family deeply and was very proud of them. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 66 years, Jeannette Alice (Tremblay) Houbre, as well as their 6 children, Stephen Houbre and his wife Brenda, Susan Doten and her husband Raymond, Ken Houbre and his wife Debbie, Charles Houbre and his wife Fatima, Catherine Alves and her husband Kevin, and Andrew Houbre, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by his brother Lawrence Houbre and his wife Florence, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 23 at Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, from 5:00-7:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 795 Dartmouth Street St, Dartmouth, on Saturday July 24 at 9:00am, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery at Route 6 and Route 140. Wearing masks for all services is optional. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choosing.
