NEW BEDFORD: Gertulio Magalhaes, 87, of New Bedford, known to many as “Julio”, died Monday, June 15, 2020, at home peacefully under the care of SouthCoast Hospice.
He was born in Arcosso, Portugal, May 3, 1933 (due to delays in birth registration in those days he was legally registered May 6, 1933). His parents were Maria (dos Santos Braga) Magalhaes and Antonio Magalhaes.
He was one of ten children, who are now all deceased: Rosa, Virginia, Felomena, Joaquina, Lidia, Sebastiao, Geronimo, Lucillia and Clara. He married his lifelong love, Nair Dos Santos Miranda in January 1955. He came to America February 17, 1960 from Portugal with his wife and four small children. They had a fifth child born in the United States.
He was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception congregation and a proud member of Clube Recordacoes de Portugal.
He was a self-taught entrepreneur who learned English and the American way of life. He and his wife were proprietors of Amaral’s Fish Market, located on Belleville Ave since 1974. He loved America and was proud to be an “American Citizen.” He would say “This country is the land of opportunity, if you have a dream and work hard at it.”
His passions in life were his family, dancing and making wine. His knowledge and passion of making wine and moonshine were passed on to his grandsons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Nair Dos Santos Miranda Magalhaes; his children: son Aleixo Magalhaes and wife Ann, daughter Lidia Sylvia and husband Richard, son Sebastiao Magalhaes and wife Alice, son Mario Magalhaes and wife Becky, son Daniel Magalhaes and wife Gisela; grandchildren: Kristina Davies, Michael Sylvia, Jason Magalhaes, Peter Magalhaes, Jaclyn Foster, Amanda Trudeau, Daniel Magalhaes, Timothy Magalhaes, Rachael Magalhaes and Nicole Pires; great grandchildren: Cody Magalhaes, Benjamin Magalhaes, Matthew Trudeau, Jacob Trudeau, Holly Davies, Jackson Davies, Lilah Foster, Levi Foster and Madison Pires.

Visiting hours will be Friday, June 19, 2020, from 5 to 8 PM, due to the restrictions of Covid-19 the amount of people is limited to ten (10) at each time, and every one have to wear a face-mask.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 20, at 9 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. All are welcome to attend, however due to current restrictions, only 100 people are allowed in the church at one time.
Arrangements are by the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
