NEW BEDFORD: Hilda S. (Macedo) Benfeito, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday June 2, 2020 after battling a brief illness.
Born in Fenais da Ajuda, St. Michael, Azores, she was the wife of the late Evaristo L. Benfeito and daughter of the late Manuel S. Macedo and Rosa S. (Comboia) Macedo.
Hilda retired early as a factory worker to focus her full time on taking care of her family and her home.
In previous years, her interests have included fishing, cooking, gardening and tending to the grape vine in the yard. She continued to love spending time with family and friends, fried fish dinners on Friday, watching daily Church Mass, and of course her beloved Red Sox.
Hilda was full of so much love and spent a lot of her time babysitting and caring for numerous children, all of whom called her "Vavoa". Her favorite of all was spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews, and her great grandchild. They were all her pride and joy, and time with them made her happier than anything.
Those that knew her, know Hilda has always been an incredible source of strength and determination. Hilda had an unfortunate accident in 2011 and was paralyzed from the neck down and told by doctors that she would never walk again. Even after the loss of her husband Evaristo shortly after, Hilda continued to fight and persevere. In 2012, shortly after the birth of her only great grandchild, she showed truly how strong she was by walking again and finally being able to return home.
She is survived by her three children; Daniel Benfeito and his wife Brenda, Lucia Sylvia and her husband Scott, Jorge Benfeito and his girlfriend Wendy Gonsalves, two grandchildren; Keri (Sylvia) Lebeau and her husband Tim, Scott (Scotty) Sylvia Jr., and one great granddaughter; Aria Lebeau. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as in-laws, and was the sister of the late Maria Aguiar (Manuel), Manuel Macedo (Christine), and Joseph Macedo (Ceceila).
Hilda was fortunate enough to be able to stay home for over 7 years until she became a full-time resident at Care One Nursing Home in October of 2019.
On behalf of Hilda’s family, we would like to take this moment to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, and especially those at Care One Nursing Home who gave so much to help take care of Hilda over the last few years. Your work, concern, and caring for Hilda is so appreciated and she loved each and every one of you. We would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Fairhaven Community Visiting Nurses for taking such good care of her while she was at home. A special thank you to Nicole for being there with her since day one.
A funeral mass will be held Monday, June 8, 2020 at 10 AM at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. All are welcome to attend, however due to current restrictions, only 100 people are allowed in the church at one time.
Also due to the current restrictions on public gatherings, the calling hours at Cabral-Baileys Square Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford, and burial at Pine Grove Cemetery, will be private.
