NEW BEDFORD; Joaquim (Jack) Baptista, beloved husband of Lois (Rapoza) Baptista passed away on Friday, December 28, 2019 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He would have been 85 on January 2nd. He was a loving father of Glenn Baptista, Wayne Baptista and his fiancée Lynne Frates, Jack (Jay) Baptista, and grandfather of Zachary Baptista. Jack and Lois would have been married sixty years in June. Jack was the son of the late Mary (Almeida) Almeida and Jose Baptista. He was the stepson of the late Fred Almeida.
Jack graduate from UMass Amherst in 1961 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. He went on to obtain an MBA from Boston College. He taught Math and Portuguese at Normandin Jr. High School from 1961 - 1965. From 1965 - 1968 he worked as a Work Training Specialist for Title V. From 1968 - 1969 he was Director of Operations for the CEP Program. From 1969 - 1974 he was the Director of the Non-English Speaking Bilingual Program. While developing and implementing programs for the Bilingual Program, he was also the Principle of two schools. From 1974 - 1993 he was the State Director of Title I under the Dept. of Education, and from 1993 - 1998 he became the Director of Title I for the Boston Public Schools.
Jack served in the U.S. Navy from November 1955 until August 1957. He was an avid sports fan. He loved all the Boston sports teams, but his favorite was the Boston Red Sox. When Jack was younger, he was in many political campaigns. He was a man of strong convictions and opposed inequality whenever he saw it. He had many lasting friendships and was respected and loved by all who knew him. In his memory tell those you care about that you love them before it's too late.
Visiting hours will be Friday, January 03, 2020 from 5 to 8 PM, at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Saturday at 9 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
