NEW BEDFORD: Born Sept. 22, 1946, died Jan. 28, 2021, John Moniz was pre-deceased by his best friend and travel companion "DUKE". John is survived by his wife Rosemarie Ann Moniz, two sons Joseph Glenwood Moniz and his wife Rita of Maryland and John Anthony Moniz and his wife Rita of New Bedford, two daughters Samantha Marie Green and Dawn Andrea Collard and her husband Paul of New Bedford. His sister Pauline Torentino and her husband Jason of Middleboro. Seven grandchildren Kayleigh and Amanda Moniz, James Paul and Austin Collard, Kerianne Green all of New Bedford, and Tyler Jacob and Jenna Madison Moniz of Maryland. His ex-wife Victoria Da Silva of New Bedford. His beloved sidekick Mr. Wiggles. Several nieces and nephews, and several cousins. He was the son of the late Jose and Hilda Moniz and one deceased sister, Janet Moniz, all of New Bedford.
John was a retiree of the City of New Bedford Water Department and a former Veterans Agent for the City of New Bedford. He served as President of A.F.S.C.M.E. local 851 for 14 years and a Board member of A.F.S.C.M.E. Council 93 Executive Board for 12 years. He was also President of the Greater New Bedford Cape Cod Labor Council. John was a Vietnam Era Veteran and Past Commander of Moby Dick American Legion Post 459. He was the commander of the Greater New Bedford Veterans Council and President of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Committee for 16 years. John was a Past President of P.A.C.E., Inc. And served as a chairperson of P.A.C.E. parent committee for 35 years. John was a member of the AARP and a life member of the Good Sam Club, a member of the Coachmen Caravan Camping Club, a 32-year member of the American Legion, a life member of the History Channel Club, a member of the National Parks and Conservation Assoc., a member of the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Assoc. and of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 914 for 23 years.
John was an avid member or instructor of several Drum and Bugle Corps for 50 years. His affiliations included: Yankee Division Drum and Bugle Corps, Twin City Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, Mount Carmel Club Scout Drum and Bugle Corps, Fall River Freeman Drum and Bugle Corps, Shields Drum and Bugle Corps, Crimson Pirates Drum and Bugle Corps, West Shore Imperials Drum and Bugle Corps, Marion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Honor Guard of the Hawthorne Caballeros Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. He was associated with the Rhode Island Drum and Bugle Corps Association, the International Drum and Bugle Corps Association, Northeast Drum and Bugle Corps Association, All-American Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Diamond Warriors Drum and Bugle Corp.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Feb.03, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM and his funeral service at 6:30 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Please be advised that due to the Covid-19 pandemic , there are strict guidelines that must be adhered to for the safety of everyone. You must wear a face-covering to be allowed entry to the services. Guests will be permitted to pay their respects and depart to allow the next guest to enter. Capacity at the funeral home will be limited. Cremation will follow.
