NEW BEDFORD: Jose Augusto Barbosa, 94, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2023, after declining health, at Care One Nursing Facility. He was the widower of the late Esperanca (Pacheco) Barbosa. He was born in Feteira Pequena, Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Acores on December 8, 1928, to the late Manuel and Maria (Barbosa) Lazaro. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 22 and automatically became a U.S citizen due to his father being an American born. He returned to the Acores, in 1956 to marry his wife Esperance and returned to the U.S. with his wife, to start their new life He was employed at Kestrel Construction, prior to starting his own business, Barbosa & Son. He worked all his life as a carpenter right up to his retirement, but still helped out his son, family and friends until he physically no longer could. He was a member of the Society of Senhor da Pedra. He was a devoted catholic and parishioner of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Bedford and had a special devotion to Senhor Da Pedra and Senhor Santo Cristo. He was a master in his trade and was known to many as Mestre Jose (Master Joe) Always ready to help anyone in need. He had a tough exterior but had a heart of Gold. He was a serious man but had a humorous side to him also. When not working, he could be found tending to his garden or in his basement fixing or building something. He was a loving father to his son Lionel Barbosa (his wife Maria Santo Cristo) and his daughter and caretaker Diane Barbosa Tavares (her partner Joel Sierra Morales) He was proud grandfather of his grandsons Neil Tavares, Victor Barbosa and granddaughter Tanya Barbosa Salgado. He was the happiest when surrounded by his 3 great-grandchildren, Brailynn Barbosa, Talon Barbosa and Jayce Salgado. He also leaves behind 3 brothers; Diogenes Lazaro, Augusto (Gus) Lazaro and Ildberto (Gilly) Lazaro, 2 sisters; Rosa Brandao & Evelina Brandao, many nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was Brother to the late Domiciano (Rocky) Carreiro, Marcelino Barbosa, Aldina Duarte, Evangelina Teixeira, and Evelina Lazaro. The family would like to thank the staff at Care One Nursing Facility in New Bedford, for their care, compassion, understanding and dedication, not only to Jose but to the family as well. His visiting hours will be on Thursday September 14, 2023, from 5 to 8 PM, at Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux funeral home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Family and friends are invited to attend his mass of Christian burial on Friday, September 15, at 10:00 AM, at Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery
