NEW BEDFORD: Jose Coelho passed away on November 06, 2021 at the age of 76 in New Bedford. His battle with medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a joke or a smile. Despite the pain and annoyance of treatments, Jose stayed strong until the end.
He loved watching Bullfights, reminiscent of his hometown in Terceira, Azores, his favorite soccer team was Benfica, he got a kick out of flirting with his nurses. He enjoyed scratching lottery tickets and eating Portuguese food, except chicken, he did not like eating chicken. He especially loved his "Papas" and boy did he have a sweet tooth.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, of 46 years to Laurinda (Magna), together they had one child, their son, Timothy who and will always be their rock, and biggest supporter. Timmy has certainly inherited his dads quick wit, sense of humor and strength. Lastly, Nina their family dog who was Jose's best friend.
Jose was the son of the late Maria DeJesus Pereira Sylvia and Jose Vieira Coelho. He was born in November 27, 1944 in Angra do Heroismo and came to this country in 1968. He retired from International Washers and Dryers where he was a painter.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. He enjoyed poetry, listening to music, singing fados, dancing, and playing spoons (a makeshitt percussion instrument).
In his younger years he could be seen at the Club de Recordacoes de Portugal, Club Madeirense SS Sacramento and Monte Pio, Jose was nicknamed "Mickey Mouse" in America and "Blackie" in Portugal.
He is the brother of Antonio Pereira Vieira, of Lowell, Ma, Leotilde Coelho Estevez of New Bedford, Luci Hayden of California, Cisela Pereira Almeida of New Bedford., several nieces, nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Visiting hours will be Friday, November 12, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass on Saturday at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street. Cremation will follow.
