NEW BEDFORD: Maria Analia (Amaral) Freitas, 88, of New Bedford, passed away at Saint Luke’s Hospital, on Thursday, August 12, 2021 after a brief and courageous battle against a pneumonia caused by the Covid19 virus. She was the wife of the late Isidro Avila Freitas, of S. Jorge, Azores.
Born on July 3, 1933, in S. Jorge, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Vitorino e Guiomar Fraga Amaral. Maria was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was pre-deceased by her brother Rogerio Luciano Amaral and her youngest sister Maria Fatima Amaral. Maria is survived by her two sons: Antonio Isidro Freitas, and his companion Gelsa Azevedo, of S. Jorge, Azores and Jose Lizuart Freitas and his wife Mary Jo Freitas, of Fairhaven, MA; by her former daughter-in-law Laura Mendonca; by her two grandchildren Lee Roy Freitas and Melissa Jane Soares, several great-grandchildren and numerous nephews/nieces and grand and great nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her older sister Josefa Barcelos, of S. Jorge and her younger sister Guiomar A. Silveira, of New Bedford.
Maria worked as a stitcher in various New Bedford mills until her early retirement by disability. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, planting flowers in her backyard (hydrangeas were her favorite), growing her thyme and fennel, and caring after her beloved “mosquito plants” which she would replant and grow every year. She loved cooking (what a great cook she was!) and having the family over to eat together (we will all miss her kale soups and rice pudding, especially). Lately, mostly homebound, she enjoyed her Portuguese soap operas and tv shows, browsing through Facebook and the challenge of online “solitaire” games and a good word puzzle. Maria was such a loving and generous person, she preferred going without than seeing someone in need. Undoubtedly, by those who shared closely Maria Analia will be greatly missed.
Her visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. Interment at Acushnet Cemetery, Main Street, Acushnet.
You MUST wear a face-covering to be allowed at the funeral home and the Church.
