NEW BEDFORD: Maria Irene (Botelho DeSousa, 85, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family, after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Gil Barbosa DeSousa.
Maria DeSousa was a very hard working, loving and spiritual mother. She was a dedicated employee at John I Paulding for years and when the factory closed she continued her devotion to her family. She raised seven children with so much love and kindness. Everyday there was a home cooked meal on the table for her family and she could cook like no other. She was a very devoted catholic, she read the bible to her children every night before bed and prayed the Rosary every night. Maria continued to be an amazing nurturer to all of her 27 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, even raising some. Family was the closest thing to her heart. She loved her family dinners, family gatherings, especially during the holidays and her Friday rendezvous with her daughters. It warmed her heart to be surrounded by her loved ones. Maria also had a great love for nature, she loved to spend time in her garden. Some of her favorite flowers were pink roses and hydrangeas. She loved her birds and her Kitty Baby. She enjoyed coffee and crafting time with her daughters. Maria was a big fan of Portuguese Soap Operas and watched her favorite movie Fatima everyday. Maria was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer three months ago. She was cared for by her loving daughters during her illness and surrounded by all who loved her right till her last moments.
She is survived by two sons Carlos DeSousa and his wife Aja, Gil DeSousa and his wife Piedade, both of New Bedfordf, five daughters Judy Carvalho and her husband Manny, Betty Torres and her husband Gilberto, Adelia Glavin and her husband David, and Irene DeSousa all New Bedford, Lucy DeSousa and her husband Darryll of Acushnet, twenty seven grandchildren, twenty five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her daughter Maria Irene DeSousa.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, November 02, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Wednesday at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford, Interment at St. John Cemetery.
