FAIRHAVEN: Maria Jose (Rocha) de Melo,89, passed away peacefully at her home,
surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, October 31, 2020, after a short period of
declining health. She is preceded by her husband of 61 years Manuel Cabral de Melo,
her brother, Jose Rocha of Vancouver and her great granddaughter,Taylor Plaud. She
is the daughter of the late Jose and Francelina Rocha.
Maria was born in Feteira Grande, Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores. She lived in New
Bedford until moving to Fairhaven where she continued to raise her children along with
Maria was a devout communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church
and was a member of the Holy Ghost Society. She loved spending her time gardening
and tending to her flowers. She possessed a strong faith and generous heart known to
all. With her wittiness brought songs to her voice that guided her through her days that
will be greatly missed by her family.
Coming from a small family in a large village she married into a large family from a small
village. Together they created their loving surviving family dynasty of ten children;
Donzilia Tadeu and her husband Antonio, Jose De Melo and his wife Connie,
Mariazinha Cabral and her husband Jose Domingos, Isabel da Costa and her husband
Jose, Maria do Ceu de Melo, and Lucia Ferreira all of Fairhaven; Valdomiro De Melo
and his wife Maggie of Acushnet; Olinda Morrison and her husband David, and Ana
Lenahan and her husband Michael of Middleboro; Joaquim de Melo of Easton; and one
sister, Angelina Soares and sister-in-law, Noemia Rocha from Vancouver. She is also
survived by 25 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 04, 2020 from 4 to 7 PM, at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral
Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Due to the restrictions of Covid-19 Pandemic the amount of the people is limited so there could be wait times outside the funeral home. You must wear a mask to be allowed entry to the funeral home.
A funeral mass will be Thursday at 8:45 AM at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. All are welcome to attend , however due to the current restrictions, only 100 people are allowed in the church at one time. Interment at Sacred Heart # 2 Cemetery.
