NEW BEDFORD Maria Melo, age 99, of New Bedford ,Massachusetts, passed away February 4 of natural causes. Maria was born in Sao Miguel, Azores on 12/7/1922. Her parents were Manuel Xavier and Gloria Souza
After coming to the United States, she grew up most of her life in New Bedford, Mass. She was employed by Vanessa manufacturing, and Kay Windsor until her retirement in 1985.
For many years. Maria was known for her fresh home made breads and enjoyed baking for family and friends. She was known to many as one of the Golden Girls. Maria was the widow of Manuel Melo and the mother of the late Aurelio Melo ,and grandmother to the late Daniel Melo of New Bedford, Mass and one great granddaughter.
She was the sister of Natalia Xavier , Tina Xavier. Isaltina Daponte ,and Theresa Maucabelo, all of New Bedford, and predeceased by her siblings Manuel Pacheco, Jouventina Xavier, Germano Xavier and Amancio Xavier, She was also survived by many many nieces and nephews.
Her visiting hours will be Wednesday morning, February 09, 2022 from 8:30 to 10:00 AM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford, Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass at 10:30 AM at same day, at Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. Interment at St. John Cemetery.
