NEW BEDFORD: Mrs. Maria do Carmo Borges (Furtado) was blessed to live a long life surrounded by a large family and friends who she considered family. While she may have passed away, the twinkle in her eye and her contagious smile will be remembered by all who danced, laughed, sang and played dominoes with her.
Maria was born in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel, Azores as one of 12 children. A widow at a young age to Mr. Manuel Costa in Sao Miguel, she moved to the United States in 1969 and lived in Fall River. Maria found love again and married Dionisio Borges. As a skilled weaver, Maria wove beautiful mantas on her loom, made woven gifts for all of her siblings, and most importantly wove a blanket of love among her dozens of nieces, nephews and godchildren across New England, Sao Miguel, and Canada that kept them close through her whole life. She was the ultimate hostess and carried on family traditions, singing family folk songs at parties.
Her family is thankful for the care Maria was provided at Brandon Woods of New Bedford where she lived for over a decade.
Her visiting hours will be Friday morning, January 13, 2023, from 10 to 11 AM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Friday at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of the Mount Carmel Church, Rivet Street, New Bedford. Interment at St. John Cemetery.
