NEW BEDFORD: Viriato C. Brandao, 83, of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, October 29,2022, after a long illness, while at home and surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Evelina (Lazaro) Brandao. He was born in Assomada, Sao Pedro, Nordestinho, Sao Miguel Acores to the late Angelo and Irene (Amaral) Brandao. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 17, on March 23, 1957; and proudly became a U.S. citizen on April 12, 1962.
He was formally employed at Bristol Clothing, Rand McNally and from Quebecor World until his retirement. He was a member of Senhor Da Pedra Club, where he served as secretary and assistant treasurer for many years. He was a devoted catholic and parishioner of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Bedford for over 65 years.
He was a quiet and gentle man but also had a witty side to him. At a younger age, he loved to go dancing with his wife and to travel with his family and friends. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and his flower beds, but above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Evelina; two daughters, Delores B. DeMedeiros and her husband Mario Jorge of New Bedford; Susan B. Cotta and her partner David Duarte of Dartmouth; one granddaughter, who was his pride and joy, Tyler Ann Cotta and her husband Parker Remy-Miller of New Bedford; one sister, Luisa Brandao Perreira of New Bedford, several nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins and many long time friends.
He was brother to the late Zenaide Brandao Teves, Antonio Brandao and Manuel Brandao
The family would like to thank the staff at Community Nurse Home Care of Fairhaven for their kindness, professionalism, understanding, patience and caring ways.
His visiting hours will be on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 5-8 p.m. at Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux funeral Home, 512 No. Front St. New Bedford. Family and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian burial on Thursday, November 3 at 9:00 am at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earl St. New Bedford. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
